How To Deal With Challenges As A Real Estate Agent

Apr 24,2008

Real estate agents often work independently, but those in an office environment at a large agency must deal with other team members every day. While some co-workers are pleasant or hardworking, others whine about the business. The way the housing market is currently in a slump, turning criticism into constructive solutions is more important than ever.

Is The Challenge From Other Real Estate Agents New?

Practically every office environment has at least one worker who consistently brings down company morale. However, if this is an ongoing pattern of behavior, then you need to develop a plan to help turn around your co-worker’s attitude. Believing that you can turn downbeat discussions into ones that are engaging and upbeat is the first step towards changing how this person affects your work.

If you find yourself getting angry at the person and not over the comments, take a step back from the situation and examine it objectively. Maybe this co-worker just rubs you the wrong way, which is entirely possible. Thinking about how much he annoys you, though, will only feed your unhappiness at work. Instead of focusing on his negative qualities, try to think positively. In what ways can you take his pessimistic comments and turn them into something valuable?

How Real Estate Agents Can Handle The Challenge

The best way to deter complaints is by sticking to a conversation plan that keeps the topic on positive issues at work, not negative ones. By acknowledging the complaints, you recognize the disapproval without having to buy into it. Ask him how he could develop a solution to the problem. Solving the issue yourself just makes it okay for people to complain without fixing anything themselves.

Unfortunately, not all work environments encourage frank exchanges about problems and solutions. Create an atmosphere that makes it safe for him to talk about new ideas. Welcoming suggestions for change will generate constructive input. Afterwards, recognize each step he takes towards developing addressing those grievances. Negative thoughts are quick to spread, but by turning them into something workable, the workplace will thrive will good vibes and energy that yield positive results.
