U.S. Regional Breakdown


With a surface area of 3.9 million square miles, the U.S. is the third-largest country in the world. Hawaii, Alaska and 48 continental states make up this vast nation. The eastern seaboard is packed with population centers and remnants of America's colonial past.

The Appalachian Mountains separate the east coast from the Great Lakes region. The Mississippi-Missouri river system divides the eastern portion of the country in half. It is the fourth-largest river system in the world.

The Great Plains stretch across the center of the country, ending in the Rocky Mountains. Farther west, the Sierra Nevada Mountains run along the same path as the Rockies. The west coast is home to beautiful beaches and forests. From coast to coast, the U.S. has a stunning collection of landscapes and regions with their own unique characteristics.

U.S. Climate by Region


Since the country is so large and spans many different types of landscapes, there is considerable regional variation in climate. In the far western part of the country, California has a Mediterranean climate. There is heavy precipitation in the coastal marine zones of the Pacific Northwest. The American Southwest features a mid-latitude desert climate. A semi-arid steppe climate dominates the Rockies and the Mountain Time zone area. Cooler temperatures prevail in the Northeast and northern-most states of the Midwest. The American South features a humid, semi-tropical climate. The southern tip of Florida is actually a complete tropical climate.

U.S. Demographics by Region


According to U.S. Census estimates for 2007, over three million people live in the U.S. The majority of the nation's population lives in the country's metropolitan areas. The New York area has over eight million people and Los Angeles has more than four million residents. Chicago, Houston and Philadelphia round out the top five most-populated metropolitan areas.

The country's mean population center has steadily shifted westward and to the south. California and Texas are the two states with the highest populations. Based on 2005 U.S. Census estimates, 45 percent of children under five in the U.S. are minorities.

The U.S. Economy


The U.S. has the largest economy of any single nation on the planet. The country is blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Industrial development and the nation's capitalist economy have propelled the U.S. to the forefront of the world economy. The U.S. is the largest consumer of oil in the world, while also serving as the world's third highest producer of oil.

Based on 2005 U.S. Census figures, the median income level per household (pretax) is $46,326. The country's access to coastal ports and extensive inland river systems help the U.S. gain an economic advantage in global trade. With a stable government, an educated population and reliance on individual economic decision-making, the U.S. has constructed one of the most impressive economies in the history off the world.

U.S. Real Estate/Available Land by Region


The U.S. is home to so many different types of real estate and land markets. The real estate opportunities around the country are as varied as the nation's diverse landscape.
