The Urban Land Institute And Urban Land Magazine

May 09,2008

The Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit research and education organization, is a place for multidisciplinary real estate exchanges of information, ideas and experiences. The goal is that these people can work together and share insights that can improve real estate policies in local, national and global arenas while guiding and creating communities that sustain and flourish.

What Does The Urban Land Institute Do?

The Urban Land Institute, or ULI, is home to over 40,000 members. These global representatives, whether working in public services or private corporations, comprise every aspect of real estate development and land use. Property owners, developers, contractors, architects, lawyers, lenders, engineers, policy-makers and CEOs are just a handful of the ULI members who track trends, analyze them and research issues dealing with land use.

Brief History Of The Urban Land Institute

Founded in 1936, the idea for ULI came during a time when American cities were witnessing crumbling urban areas and booming suburban building. Walter Schmidt, a real estate entrepreneur from Cincinnati, led six other builders in the establishment of a separate research organization within the National Association of Real Estate Boards, which is known today as the National Association of Realtors. Instead, the group split and became its own entity in 1940. ULI continues to study and interpret trends in the industry, as well as publish information and statistics regarding real estate data.

Urban Land Magazines

In addition to the investigations ULI conducts, the organization publishes three magazines concerning trends in architecture, housing, downtown revitalization and renovation, public policies, environmental management and developments of all kinds, from industrial to hotels and resorts.

Each magazine features information, statistics and opinions from leaders in real estate. Urban Land Green deals with environmental issues, while Multifamily Trends examines families and housing. Urban Land magazine focuses on issues within metropolitan areas and urban development. As ULI continues expanding its presence and research throughout the world, it also remains an influential organization in determining real estate trends.
