Acreage For Home

Aug 28,2008

How much acreage one needs for a home is largely dependent upon the location of the home and goals the person has for their home. In an urban environment, much less than an acre is required for a home. In fact, more acreage may not even be possible.

In the suburbs, slightly more acreage may be reasonable. Acreage for homes on the countryside or open plains can reach much higher numbers.

Determining Acreage for a Home

If you are buying a pre-built home or rebuilding an existing home, the amount of acreage will generally be determined for you. If you are building your own home in an area with multiple lots of acreage available, you have a decision to make.

Are you considering a ranch home with room for things like horseback riding? You’ll probably want more acres than if you’re just looking for a vacation home within walking distance of the nearest fishing stream.

Of course, budgetary constraints are also a consideration. With that said, acreage in different locations can have very different price ranges. Shop around to find an amount of acreage that fits into your budget.

Value of Acreage for a Home

Remember that even though you may be purchasing your lot to live on or as a vacation home, you are making a land investment. Land has intrinsic value that often grows over time, especially in many cases when you decide to develop the land. While you consider your land purchase, keep in mind the potential value your acreage may have down the road.
