Aug 27,2008

The rolling ocean waves and crystal-clear skies are nothing compared to the sheer size of the mammoth mountains that shelter the city of Juneau, Alaska. While small and quaint in population, Juneau is an expansive area full of pristine wilderness and prime real estate waiting for a new owner who is looking to get away from it all.

About Juneau, Alaska

Juneau, which is both a city and a borough, is on the Gastineau Channel in the Alaskan Panhandle. It sits at the base of Mount Juneau, just a mile and a half east of the downtown area.

The enormous mountain overshadows the city and is nearly as large as the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware. The Taku River flows to the south of the city, making it an ideal fishing spot, while the mountain is excellent for climbing and hiking.

While the city has a population of just over 30,000 people, it functions as the state capital of Alaska. Juneau has two districts comprised of various smaller towns, with one district as home to the downtown area. Perseverance Theatre, the only professional theatre in Alaska, is in Juneau, along with the state capitol.

Downtown Juneau has tons of art galleries that showcase pieces in the city’s monthly First Friday Gallery Walk and December Gallery Walk. Juneau is also the host of the annual Alaska Folk Festival and Juneau Jazz & Classic music festivals.
